U.S. Institute of Peace Asks Court to Stop Trump From Carving His Name Into Building

The U.S. Institute of Peace on Thursday asked a federal appeals court for emergency relief to prevent the Trump administration from carving President Donald Trump’s name into the facade of its Washington headquarters, which was renamed after him last year.

Trump had placed his name on the building last December — calling it the “Donald J. Trump US Institute of Peace” — after dismantling the independent agency, which works on conflict resolution and was created by Congress in 1984.

The agency’s lawyers said in the filed lawsuit that the administration is “dissatisfied with the relative impermanence of the exterior lettering” and now appears to have “taken steps to prepare to carve” Trump’s name into the front of the building; they said they “understand that a formal request for the work has been made and a contractor has been selected.”

The request comes as Trump fights to put his name on another iconic building in the American capital, the Kennedy Center. On Thursday, a federal judge ordered the Kennedy Center board to give 30 days’ notice before any demolition or new construction. Trump was photographed Wednesday evening examining a poster reading “Kennedy Center DEMOLISHED.”
