U.S. states rush to curb fuel prices: tax cuts and emergency measures as supply tightens
U.S. states have taken a series of measures to curb rising gasoline and diesel prices, driven by the U.S.-led war against Iran and Russia’s war in Ukraine, as Reuters reports via Al Jazeera’s live update.
According to the agency, states such as Georgia, Indiana and Kentucky are trying to cut taxes at the pump, while California and Michigan are expanding the types of fuel allowed for sale. In Montana, Nebraska and South Dakota, authorities are easing transport restrictions for fuels and agricultural goods, while supply remains under pressure.
Meanwhile, the White House is considering regulatory relief for sales of red-dyed diesel — a fuel normally reserved for off-road use, such as agriculture, and exempt from most federal fuel taxes. President Trump said last week that he supports a ban on U.S. oil exports to help stabilize domestic markets.
Rising fuel prices are becoming one of the main political issues in the U.S. ahead of the November elections, with polls showing widespread dissatisfaction over the cost of living.
