Uefa-Fifa clash deepens: Ceferin appeals to European clubs — it is time to say ‘enough’ to Infantino
The clash between Fifa and Uefa is getting fiercer and fiercer.
The president of European football’s governing body, Alexander Ceferin, has again appealed to the clubs of the Old Continent to withdraw their support from the current head of Fifa.
Ceferin took part in the General Assembly of the EFC (European Football Clubs) in Copenhagen and, in his speech referring to Gianni Infantino, he also cited Hans Christian Andersen’s well-known tale “The Emperor’s New Clothes” to ask the clubs no longer to support the head of Fifa after his plan to bring private investors into a new commercial company for the World Cup.
“Recently the football world has heard some very comfortable words mentioned; development, democracy, consultation,” Ceferin said. “Selling off a part of football’s future does not become ‘development’ just because you describe it as such. Presenting national federations with a fait accompli does not mean democracy even if you call it that, whatever the sum on the cheque. Secrecy does not become consultation just because you define it that way.”
Ceferin then spoke about how the Folarin Balogun case was handled at the World Cup, when his one-match suspension was lifted after a phone call between U.S. President Donald Trump and Infantino.
“Imagine that the same person creates a prize for a politician and that, a little later, that same politician phones him and suddenly the rules change,” Ceferin added. “How many times does something like that have to happen at your clubs before the board says ‘enough’? Well, my friends, the moment has come to say ‘enough’.”
