UK – Burnham: The data point to a possible role for Iran in the plot
LONDON, September 30 /ATSH-DPA/ – British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said there are “strong indications” that Iran may have had a role in the suspected terrorist plot near the British military base “RAF Fairford”.
Five British citizens, aged 23–25, were arrested over the weekend on suspicion of offences related to explosives and terrorism.
A quantity of petrol was found in their vehicles, but no explosives were found.
All five persons were released on police bail, while the investigation continues.
This means that they have not been declared innocent or guilty, but the police continue to investigate and they must respect the conditions set.
Burnham said the investigation is serious and complex, but the British authorities have the situation under control.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the event clearly involves the interference of a foreign actor, without saying directly that it is about Iran.
U.S. President Donald Trump said the plot may be linked to Iran and criticized the decision to release the suspects.
The British police are also investigating the possibility that Iran used other persons to carry out actions in Great Britain, but this remains part of the investigation and has not been verified.
The Iranian embassy in London has denied any involvement in the event.
