USA – Obama: If I were running for president, AI would be my priority
NEW YORK, September 14 /ATSH – ANSA/ – Former United States President Barack Obama has urged Democrats to prioritize drafting a clear plan for artificial intelligence (AI), stressing the need to address both the risks and the opportunities the new technology brings.
Speaking at a fundraising event held in recent days, Obama said that if he were a presidential candidate next year, AI would be one of the key points of his platform.
“I would have a clear plan and I would talk about it, saying: this is our plan for security, this is how we will guarantee our children,” Obama said, according to NBC.
He said he would also concretely assess the economic consequences of AI development, particularly its impact on job losses.
Obama described artificial intelligence as potentially dangerous, but stressed that if managed properly, it could bring great benefits.
“It is a field that is developing very fast in private hands and, if we do not take control of it, I believe it can become dangerous. If we manage to manage it properly, I think it can bring benefits,” he said.
According to Obama, AI could help accelerate the treatment of many diseases and the development of clean energies.
“We don’t want to shut these opportunities out, but we must understand that this is a tool,” the former U.S. president stressed.
According to reports, Obama also described as an “encouraging development” the call by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei to slow down the development of artificial intelligence.
