Vladimir Guerrero Jr. apologizes for comments about his 14-year, $500 million Blue Jays contract
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has apologized after facing criticism over his comments about the 14-year, $500 million contract with the Toronto Blue Jays signed last season. The news comes as a difficult 2026 season comes to an end for the five-time All-Star.
As Bleacher Report reports, in an interview with Veronica Batista on the show “Grandes Ligas,” Guerrero said the big payday was awarded for what he had already achieved, not necessarily for what he will do in the future. He admitted that he sometimes feels he isn’t doing much himself, but stressed that he appreciates the support of true fans who have stood by him.
The contrast with 2025 is stark: that season Guerrero hit .292 with an .848 OPS, 23 home runs and 84 RBIs in the regular season, and excelled in the playoffs (8 home runs, 17 RBIs, a .397 average and 1.289 OPS). In 2026 his numbers fell to nine home runs, 56 RBIs, a .263 average and a .695 OPS, as he dealt with back and hamstring issues and took a blow to the head after colliding with New York Yankees shortstop George Lombard Jr.
Guerrero initially defended himself and said he didn’t regret those words, but later changed his stance and apologized for how he expressed himself. The Blue Jays endured a difficult 2026 season, but the club and its players hope that a new season, despite concerns over a possible lockout, could give them the chance to bounce back and reach their potential.
Bleacher Report reports that Guerrero has expressed regret for the comments and has apologized to those affected by his statements.
