Von der Leyen on the investigations and SHISH: Proof the justice system works! Rama: Political responsibility, an old refrain!

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that the investigations into various cases are proof that the justice system is working, while Prime Minister Edi Rama said his political responsibility is the continuation of the justice reform and the fight against corruption and organised crime.

During the discussion, von der Leyen said that the development of investigations shows the strengthening of the system and that the processes under way should be seen as part of its functioning.

Von der Leyen said:

“When we see cases that are being investigated, they are proof that the system is working. This is the strengthening of the system.”

For his part, Prime Minister Edi Rama said his political responsibility is for the justice reform to continue.

Edi Rama said:

“The story of political responsibility is a story, a refrain, repeated endlessly in the public discussion environment here, and I do not pretend to make you change. My political responsibility is one and only one: that the justice reform does not stop, the fight against corruption and organised crime and everyone. That it develops as a mission of the system. Because we have been in this country, at a sufficient age to judge individually, where the things we see today and that happen today could not even be imagined.

The things that happen today once could not be imagined; this country I am speaking of was not in the last century, but until before the justice reform. If your question implies that for the individual responsibilities of one or another we should answer as in communism, we have changed that system. If you think that when an appointment is made, responsibility arises for the one who appoints as a result of the fact that the appointee may make mistakes along the way, that is a way of seeing things as in communism.

Our duty is to account for everything we are doing, and whoever betrays must face the other side of power, which is justice. This is democracy. In France the minister of justice was accused of paedophilia, he did not leave office. The president simply left it in the hands of justice and afterwards the minister came out innocent and stayed in office. What is certain is that no one is protected when it comes to facing the consequences of an action that enters the sphere of justice. Here my political responsibility begins and ends.”
