Vučić formally hands over to Brnabić: seal, decrees and handover protocol at the Presidency

Aleksandar Vučić, who resigned last night as president of Serbia, this morning formally handed over the office to Ana Brnabić, speaker of the National Assembly, in his office at the Presidency, as the Serbian news agency Tanjug reports.

According to Tanjug’s reporting, Vučić handed Brnabić the presidential seal, the decrees on decorations and the pardon-service decrees for both of his presidential terms, as well as the gift register, the financial report, the work report and the report on judicial conflicts and enforcement proceedings. At the end of the meeting, the official handover protocol was also signed.

Brnabić will exercise the president’s duties until a new president of Serbia is elected. Under the Constitution, she can serve as acting president for a maximum of 90 days, while presidential elections must be held within this year — the first round is expected by the end of December.

Vučić said yesterday he resigned because he wants to take part in the October 25 parliamentary elections as an ordinary citizen, thus opening a new political chapter in Serbia.

This morning’s ceremony at the Presidency formally completes the transfer of powers at the top of the Serbian state, a day after Vučić’s unprecedented act of resignation.
