‘Woman, Life, Freedom’ Movement Leaves Its Mark on Iranian Cinema

Four years after the death of Mahsa Amini and the mass protests of 2022, the impact of the ‘Woman, Life, Freedom’ movement continues to be felt in Iranian society, particularly in cinema.

Iranian filmmakers are increasingly portraying women who openly defy state-imposed restrictions. In several new films, women appear without headscarves, sing in public and reject the rules they previously had to observe because of censorship.

The change is also visible in how films are made. A growing number of filmmakers are producing works without the authorities’ official permits, defying the censorship system. Some of them have faced prosecution, imprisonment and fines.

This phenomenon is not new to Iranian cinema, which has a long history of confrontation with censorship. However, the 2022 protests appear to have accelerated this process, creating a kind of ‘parallel cinema’ in which artists aim to present reality without the filter of the authorities.

Four years after Amini’s death, the movement’s greatest impact in this field may be precisely this: filmmakers are increasingly refusing to adapt reality to the demands of state censorship.
