“Worthy of Serbia” movement protests outside Danas newspaper — after N1 and Nova
Members of the “Dostojni Srbije” (“Worthy of Serbia”) movement, who in recent weeks have protested outside the offices of television stations N1 and Nova.rs, gathered on Tuesday outside the newsroom of the daily newspaper Danas in Belgrade, blocking traffic on the street where the building is located.
As Danas itself reports, the “Temporary Assembly of the People worthy of Serbia” parked a truck with a sound system in front of the newspaper’s building, unfurled flags and played songs, paralyzing activity in the area for a time.
The movement had previously disrupted the work of several other media outlets operating within United Media. Activists told Danas journalists and editor-in-chief Draža Petrović that they had not come to disrupt the newsroom’s work, but because Danas, according to them, “doesn’t write the truth” and never reports on their activities.
Asked whether they had notified the Interior Ministry of the public gathering, they replied that they do not recognize those institutions, “because the only true Assembly is the one they proclaimed two years ago.”
The event comes in the midst of the campaign for Serbia’s snap parliamentary elections on October 25, where pressure on independent media has become one of the central themes of public debate.
