“You have the 22 votes for the president”: Deliu calls on LVV over changes to the Specialist Chambers law

Blerta Deliu, a deputy of the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK), has asked the Assembly of Kosovo to approve the amendments to the Law on the Specialist Chambers — saying, as KosovaPress reports, that in return the PDK would place its 22 votes at the disposal of the election of Kosovo’s president.

The remarks came on KosovaPress’s “Intervista e javës” (Interview of the Week) programme, a day after the Government returned to the Assembly the PDK-sponsored draft law. According to Deliu, adopting the amendment to the law in two readings would pave the way for a political agreement on the president, stressing that the country needs stability and a figure who brings the political forces closer together.

“If the law is approved in two readings, the amendment to the Law on the Specialist Chambers in the Assembly, the Democratic Party of Kosovo will have its 22 votes available for the election of the president. We believe that in such situations of civic need, a name must be found that contributes to stability,” she said, according to KosovaPress.

Asked who the candidate might be who would unite LVV and the PDK, she named no one in particular, but said the president should be a figure who brings the political forces together and avoids new parliamentary elections. Deliu stressed that the PDK does not want new elections, but will not support decisions that, in her view, would amount to an extension of LVV’s rule, KosovaPress reports.

The PDK deputy warned of an escalation of citizens’ protests if the draft law amending the Specialist Chambers law is not approved. Speaking about the possibility of new elections in November if no solution is found for the president, she said the September 16 judgment against the former KLA leaders will be an unavoidable part of the election campaign, according to KosovaPress.
