“Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother” Hits Cinemas Today: Mahershala Ali as the Devout Hitman Who Shuns Guns, With Giancarlo Esposito

“Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother”, the new Amazon MGM Studios thriller-drama written and directed by Bassam Tariq, opens in American cinemas today. The nationwide premiere comes just days after its world debut at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), where the film earned strong reviews from critics, as ComingSoon.net reports.

Two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali plays Latif, a deeply devout contract killer who operates by a strict personal code: he categorically refuses firearms and uses only bladed weapons against those he deems dangerous. After the sudden death of his wife, Latif must care for the children, including an infant daughter who refuses formula. Desperate, he sets off across Houston on an impossible journey in search of breast milk.

The mission plunges him into violent conflict with a religious extremist cult, led by a character played by John Cho, while Giancarlo Esposito plays a prominent community imam who challenges Latif in his attempt to reconcile faith with a violent profession. The cast also includes Tramell Tillman, Tiffany Boone, Abubakr Ali, Laith Nakli and Adia, as the grieving teenage daughter.

The film also has an intriguing behind-the-scenes layer: Bassam Tariq was hired in 2021 to direct Marvel’s planned “Blade” reboot, starring Ali, but left before filming began following creative changes. Ali used months of martial-arts and bladed-weapons training, prepared for that project, in this role.

The film’s unusual title comes from an Islamic hadith on the importance of honoring one’s mother; at its core, the film is a story about grief, faith, parenthood and redemption.
