Zach Cregger’s “Resident Evil” sets franchise record with $26.3 million opening day; Sony projects $53–55 million weekend
Zach Cregger’s new Resident Evil film has set a new franchise record, earning $26.3 million on opening day from 3,684 theaters across North America, according to figures released Saturday.
Sony projects the $75 million-budgeted film will close its opening weekend with $53–55 million domestically, while some industry sources predict it could reach as high as $60 million.
The box office success is backed by outstanding reception: the film holds 96% from critics and 91% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, a B+ CinemaScore, and 4.5 out of 5 on PostTrak — the best reception ever for a Resident Evil film.
The same weekend, Practical Magic 2 fell a steep 65% in its second weekend, with just $10.4 million and a domestic total of $48.2 million against a $75 million budget.
Overall, the weekend is expected to close with around $111 million for all films — 27% more than last week and 45% more than the same period in 2025.
