Academic Plenum: Vučić, through the RIK, has begun stealing the elections
The Academic Plenum announced today that Aleksandar Vučić, the holder of the “Ujedinjena Srbija” (United Serbia) electoral list, through the Republic Electoral Commission (RIK) has begun, as they say, stealing the elections — as Nova.rs reports, citing the Beta agency.
According to the Academic Plenum, the RIK, where representatives of the ruling parties hold the majority, in the session held during the night has “suspended Article 52 of the Constitution of the Republic of Serbia”, which guarantees every adult citizen the right to vote in general and equal elections. The decisions not to open polling stations in many countries abroad and to adapt voting hours to Serbia’s time zone, according to them, directly violate electoral rights.
As they stress, many voters in the diaspora would be forced to travel over 1,000 kilometres to the polling station and, because of the time difference, to vote at night. “Through his loyalists in the RIK, Vučić is hindering the diaspora’s vote in the countries where his electoral list is expected to suffer a debacle,” the Academic Plenum’s reaction states.
They add that this decision confirms the polls which show the students as winners, therefore “a kind of election theft is being carried out right at the beginning of the electoral process”. The Plenum called on the Foreign Minister, Marko Gjurić, and the members of the RIK to bring their actions back within the legally provided framework, and closed the reaction with the warning: “Immediately after the elections of 25 October, all those who violated the laws will have to answer for all the criminal offences committed.”
