Alex Bregman Describes Severe Facial Injuries: ‘I’m Very Lucky It Wasn’t Worse’

Chicago Cubs third baseman Alex Bregman suffered multiple facial fractures on Sunday after being hit by a deflected ball during the game at Wrigley Field. He said the pain is bearable, but the left side of his face has gone numb as it is believed to have fractured near a nerve; as the swelling subsided he felt more pain. Bregman added that he feels very lucky the hit was not a few centimeters higher, as that would have been more dangerous.

According to Bleacher Report, Bregman will not be placed on the injured list and hopes to return to the field as the Cubs fight for playoff position. President of baseball operations Jed Hoyer stated the most serious part of the injuries has been avoided and everything now depends on tolerance and the healing process. Manager Craig Counsell said the team will take measures to protect him as much as possible and is considering options for additional protection.

Bregman, 32, has finished this season with a .262 average, 26 home runs, 89 RBI, 89 runs scored and an .804 OPS in 153 games — his first season with the Cubs.

He expressed gratitude that the injury was not more severe and said he will focus on recovery in hopes of returning as soon as possible. As Bleacher Report reports, the medical staff and club are monitoring his progress to determine the pace of his recovery.
