Allan Saint-Maximin’s magic raises expectations for Charlotte FC

Allan Saint-Maximin arrived in Charlotte as a player with a big name and a strong personality, bringing with him technical ability and an attacking style that has caught the fans’ attention.

Since his arrival last summer, he has given a creative dimension to the attack that is raising the club’s expectations and setting new standards for the way the team plays.

According to mlssoccer, former coaches and teammates have praised Saint-Maximin’s skill, speed, and technical duality, as well as his ability to decide games at key moments. The praise highlights both the spectacular moments of his dribbling and his impact on the pitch when the team needs to change the attacking rhythm.

Charlotte coach Dean Smith describes him as an unpredictable and technical player, able to beat opponents in different ways and with a powerful shot from distance. Captain Ashley Westwood recalls how difficult it was to stop him when they faced each other in the Premier League, showing that even the best defenders sometimes have to double up to contain him.

In MLS he has started at pace, registering 1 goal and 5 assists in the first eight games, while also providing decisive moments such as the late finish that gave the 2-1 win over D.C. United and extended Charlotte’s unbeaten run since his arrival in July. His presence has strengthened the creativity of the attack and boosted the performances of teammates such as Pep Biel and Liel Abada.

Saint-Maximin’s career includes the long spell in the Premier League with Newcastle (2019–2023), the subsequent transfer to Al-Ahli, the loan to Fenerbahçe, and the move to Club América, before a racist incident against his family in Mexico forced him to temporarily return to France with Lens. All these experiences influenced his decision to join Charlotte, where the decision was also considered with the aim of securing a better environment and schools for his children.

The coach and teammates value him as a quiet leader off the pitch and an inspiring player on it, while elements of his style — such as headbands and visible fashion leanings — have added color to the team’s identity. These details and quotes are also included in mlssoccer’s reporting.
