Amazon to invest over $1 billion in the U.S. communities where it has data centers
Amazon’s cloud division, Amazon Web Services, announced on Friday that it will invest over $1 billion over the next five years in the American communities where it operates its data centers, as Reuters reports. The investment aims to address concerns about the impact of these centers on electricity and water consumption.
Data centers, which provide computing power for training and running artificial intelligence models, have met opposition in communities across America over concerns about electricity demand, utility costs and other local impacts.
Amazon said it had invested $276 billion in data centers between 2011 and 2025 and has major projects or expansions in states such as Indiana, Louisiana, North Carolina, Virginia and Mississippi. According to Reuters, the community investment plans will include spending on education, job training, energy price affordability, water and energy conservation, and other local priorities.
The company also sought to rebut criticism of data centers over their environmental, energy and economic impacts, stressing that more than 100 data center moratoriums are under consideration nationwide. AWS chief executive Matt Garman said: “There is urgency in this data center building because we’re not the only country that sees the benefits of AI for the economy and for national security, and the countries that lead in AI will shape it and benefit the most from it.”
AWS also pledged to be “water positive” across all its data centers by 2030, returning more water to communities than it consumes, and said it is 75% of the way toward that goal, according to Reuters.
