“You Should Be Dancing” opens today in New York: an exhibition on the chaos and creativity of the ’70s, from disco to punk and hip-hop

The New York Historical, New York’s first museum, opens today, 2 October, the exhibition «You Should Be Dancing: New York, 1976 and Beyond», which will remain open until 4 April 2027. It is the grand finale of a series of six exhibitions dedicated to America’s 250th anniversary, as Artnet reports.

The exhibition turns the clock back to 1976 — the year of America’s bicentennial, when New York was the main stage of the celebrations: parades and festivals, the «Grand Parade of Sailing Ships» in the city’s harbour and the Democratic National Convention at Madison Square Garden. The same period was also the city’s darkest moment: near bankruptcy, with rising crime, housing and drug crises, when the New York Daily News published its legendary headline: «Ford to City: Drop Dead».

It was precisely out of this chaos that the musical genres that changed America and the world were born: disco, punk and hip-hop. The Ramones and Blondie led the punk revival at CBGB in downtown Manhattan; disco clubs opened in Queens and Brooklyn; hip-hop street culture was born in the Bronx and upper Manhattan, with DJs rediscovering entirely new ways of listening to music.

Through musical instruments, performance equipment, period clothing, photographs of the time, albums, flyers, posters and performance clips, the exhibition recreates the clubs, bars and gathering places of that era, according to the official statement of The New York Historical.

«1970s New York was an era of contradictions: while economic conditions deteriorated, creativity exploded» — says Dr. Louise Mirrer, president and CEO of The New York Historical, according to the institution’s statement.

On opening night, according to Artnet, there will also be a special programme with a dance party.
