Broken Rackets, Insults and Retirements: US Open Collects $112,500 in Fines From Players

US Open organizers collected a total of $112,500 in fines for 20 Grand Slam Code of Conduct violations committed by players in New York.

The fined violations ranged from racket smashing to on-court arguments, costing the athletes not only their patience but also their money.

Among the tournament’s biggest fines was that of Luisina Giovannini, who was penalized $20,000 in qualifying. The Argentine withdrew from her match after just 17 minutes, trailing 0-5.

Meanwhile, Corentin Moutet paid a $15,000 fine, split between $5,000 for racket or equipment abuse and $10,000 for a dress-code violation.

Italy’s Luciano Darderi accumulated $10,000 in fines, corresponding to two $5,000 penalties for racket and equipment abuse. In one of his matches, the Italian destroyed his racket by repeatedly hitting it on the court and then handed the remains to a spectator.

Terence Atmane was fined $7,500 for a verbal threat against the tournament’s physiotherapist, who refused to give him a strap, believing he was suffering from stomach pain rather than an injury.

Jaime Faria was also fined $7,500, although the exact reason for the punishment has not been made public. It may be linked to an audible obscenity or another violation.

Dalibor Svrcina and Francisco Cerúndolo will each have to pay $5,000 for racket damage. Arthur Gea, Tristan Boyer, Sebastian Ofner, Otto Virtanen and Vilius Gaubas were also fined $2,500 for racket abuse.

Finally, Aryna Sabalenka was fined $7,500 for racket and equipment abuse after smashing her racket following her loss to Elena Rybakina in the final. During the match, the Belarusian also received a code violation for ball abuse.

Arthur Fils was fined $5,000 for throwing his racket after his first-round loss to Tsitsipas. Belinda Bencic also received the same amount for unsportsmanlike conduct after hitting a ball toward a ball boy or girl, which then hit someone in the stands. (A.V.)
