Bulgaria’s Foreign Ministry summons the head of the Macedonian embassy in Sofia after a Bulgarian MP was denied entry to North Macedonia
Bulgaria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned the acting head of the Macedonian embassy in Sofia, as Fokus reports, after Bulgarian MP Angell Georgiev was not allowed to enter North Macedonia. The diplomatic move is Sofia’s first official reaction after the incident at the border.
MP Georgiev, chair of the parliamentary committee on policies for Bulgarians abroad, made the case known himself through a Facebook post, Kosova Times reports. He was travelling to Kočani to attend the court hearing for Iva Mihajllova, who also holds Bulgarian citizenship. Georgiev said he had attended two previous court hearings in Kočani, but this time he was not allowed to enter for a reason that, according to him, was fabricated.
Mihajllova is accused in North Macedonia of a serious criminal offence related to road traffic, according to the same reporting. The accident, in which several people were injured, including Mihajllova herself, happened at the beginning of October 2025. After the accident, her documents were seized, which, according to her statements to Bulgarian media, does not allow her to receive medical treatment in Bulgaria — one of the places where she could be treated because of the nature of her spinal injuries.
MP Georgiev declared that he will ask Bulgaria’s Foreign Ministry to raise the issue with European institutions and to react to the authorities of North Macedonia as well. The summoning of the embassy head to the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry is the first concrete diplomatic step after the incident, at a time when relations between Skopje and Sofia are strained over several open issues.
