Whitney Museum union sets strike for October 5: major Roy Lichtenstein retrospective threatened
The unionised workers of the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York have set a final strike deadline: starting Monday, October 5, 2026, they will go on strike if no new collective agreement is reached with the museum. The decision comes from members organised in UAW Local 2110, as Hyperallergic reports, and constitutes a major escalation in the ongoing labour negotiations at one of the city’s most important art institutions.
The chosen deadline is no coincidence: it coincides precisely with the preview week for the major Roy Lichtenstein retrospective, ‘Like New’, which opens to the public on October 11, while press and member previews begin on October 6. A strike in that week would threaten one of the most important events of the autumn season in the art world, according to The Art Newspaper.
Tensions rose during September, when unions at the Whitney, the Brooklyn Museum and the American Folk Art Museum voted to authorise strikes. The Whitney workers’ first three-year contract expired in June 2026 — a contract that had raised the minimum wage from $17 to $24 an hour. Now the workers are seeking a base salary of about $71,000 a year, an amount estimated as the minimum needed to live in New York for a single adult.
The union warns the strike will be indefinite, meaning it will continue until an agreement is reached, while museum leaders say they continue to negotiate in good faith. If the parties do not find common ground within the week, New York could face its first major museum strike at the peak of the autumn art season.
