AI-produced short film ‘The Gifted’ wins inaugural Future Vision XPRIZE: $2.5 million for the feature-length version

‘The Gifted’ — the short film produced with the help of artificial intelligence by independent filmmaker Jeff Synthesized — has been declared the first winner of the international Future Vision XPRIZE competition, a global contest for science-fiction cinema that asks filmmakers to answer the question of what a future worth building looks like, as Deadline reports. The winner was announced live on the Moonshots LIVE stage in Los Angeles, before a jury including astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, novelist Neal Stephenson, Google’s Vice President for Technology and Society Mira Lane and Rod Roddenberry of Roddenberry Entertainment.

The Gifted follows an 11-year-old boy who, driven by love, tries to rebuild his late mother from the digital traces she left behind — her messages, voice and diary. What awakens never commands, only asks, and becomes a quiet, supportive presence for the whole community — a reflection of the filmmaker’s belief that technology’s greatest promise lies in empathy and human connection, not in shiny gadgets.

According to the official XPRIZE website, the prize includes $100,000 in cash for script development and $2.5 million as an equity investment for production of the feature-length film, with development and production supported by Range Media Partners and Google through the 100 ZEROS initiative. Republic Film will open a public investment campaign for the production. The project’s distinction is that Synthesized made it entirely himself — directing, editing, music and sound mix — through long working hours, with it selected from more than 2,500 trailers and treatments from around the world.

The four runners-up — ‘Nobody Dies on Mars’, ‘Thorne Protocol’, ‘Senti’ and ‘Slingshot’ — each received $100,000 in cash. The Gifted also won the SPECS audience award sponsored by Snap, by entirely public vote, receiving an additional $50,000.

The Gifted’s victory comes at a moment of fierce debate in Hollywood over the role of artificial intelligence in filmmaking, and places the competition at the centre of the industry’s attention. Google’s 100 ZEROS initiative aims to finance production of hundreds of film projects, and this winner is the first major test of technology’s ambition to enter the world of cinema seriously.
