Canada look to build on World Cup momentum as the road to 2030 begins
Coach Jesse Marsch and Canada’s national team aim to maintain the pace of progress achieved during the 2026 World Cup. In the first international window after the tournament, the team is playing three friendlies against Chile, Peru and the USA, and Marsch has largely kept the core of players, adding only a few new faces. The first match is played at Toronto’s BMO Field, a stadium that has returned to its normal capacity and looks very different from the arena that hosted the 1–1 opening draw with Bosnia-Herzegovina in June.
As mlssoccer reports, 26 players have been called up for this phase, while the American opponents have invited a large group of uncapped players, including eight teenagers. Marsch has stressed there is no need for radical changes now; the aim is to continue developing and work every day to strengthen the elements they want to be excellent at, as a new cycle toward 2030 begins.
Clear goals for the new cycle include climbing into FIFA’s top 24 national teams and securing a Pot 2 spot for the 2030 World Cup draw, which would improve their path in the tournament. According to mlssoccer, winning the Concacaf Nations League or the Gold Cup and qualifying directly for 2030 are also part of the expectations. Experienced and young players alike will find their roles; as Liam Millar has put it, the players built in the group must help the newcomers adapt to the team’s style.
Canada will be without some key names during this camp — captain Alphonso Davies is on his honeymoon and Derek Cornelius is out with a training injury — but a number of players arrive in the national team in good form from their clubs. Jonathan David was just loaned to Atlético Madrid and has scored in recent matches, Cyle Larin has eight goals in ten matches for Southampton, while players like Tajon Buchanan, Tani Oluwaseyi and Nathan Saliba now play for Villarreal. Goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair arrives after success in the Campeones Cup with Inter Miami.
In this campaign the team will also honor players who marked an era with the national team: Junior Hoilett and Samuel Piette, each with 69 national-team caps, will receive special tributes in the matches against Chile and Peru, after both were left out of the World Cup squad and these are expected to be their final appearances for the national team. According to mlssoccer, Marsch and the staff see this period as an opportunity to consolidate the team’s identity and build a stronger foundation toward the 2030 goals.
