Classic Belgian waffles with fruit and maple syrup — the crispy, sweet breakfast
Belgian waffles, originating from Brussels, are one of the world’s most beloved breakfast treats. Their crispy crust and soft interior, combined with fresh fruit and maple syrup, make them the perfect choice for weekend breakfasts or festive occasions.
Ingredients (for 4 servings)
- 250 g wheat flour
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 eggs
- 400 ml milk
- 80 g melted butter (plus a little for the waffle iron)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- To serve: sliced strawberries, banana slices, maple syrup
Preparation steps
- In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt.
- In another bowl, whisk the eggs with the milk, melted butter and vanilla.
- Combine the liquid ingredients with the dry ones and stir gently, without overmixing — the batter should remain slightly lumpy.
- Heat the waffle iron and grease it lightly with butter.
- Pour about 120 ml of batter into the centre of the iron, close it and bake for 4–5 minutes, until golden and crispy.
- Repeat until the batter is used up; keep the baked waffles in a warm oven so they do not cool down.
- Serve immediately with strawberries, banana slices and warm maple syrup on top.
Time: 15 minutes preparation + 20 minutes baking. Servings: 4.
Belgian waffles are tastiest served straight from the iron. If you wish, replace the maple syrup with honey or add toasted nuts on top for extra crunch. (Photo: Wikimedia Commons / Andy Li, CC0)
