Cooper Rush expected to start for Falcons against Panthers, Michael Penix Jr. still not ready
Cooper Rush is expected to start as quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons in the Week 2 game against the Carolina Panthers, while Michael Penix Jr. is not yet ready to return as the starter. Rush took the starter’s reps in Friday’s practice, indicating he will make the second start of the season.
As nfl reports, insider Ian Rapoport announced Friday that Rush is taking over the starting duties, while Penix — who progressed during the week as a full participant in Wednesday and Thursday practices — continues to rehab after last season’s ACL injury and is not yet considered ready. The Falcons are acting cautiously because of his history of major knee ligament injuries.
Rush also played in Week 1 against the Pittsburgh Steelers despite a back issue, but had a difficult outing: 12 of 22 passes for 143 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions, including a pick-six that decided the game. He had only a few deep passes and six of his completions were behind the line of scrimmage; he also completed no passes under pressure, according to Next Gen Stats.
Atlanta hopes the first week’s weaknesses were the result of an unexpected start and physical problems; otherwise, the team risks starting the season 0-2. The offense is expected to lean again on Bijan Robinson against the Panthers, who last week allowed over 100 rushing yards to two Chicago players. According to nfl, the organization will continue to act cautiously in managing Penix’s recovery until he is fully ready to return.
