Democratic Congressman Gregory Meeks Blocks $2.8 Billion Bomb Sale to Israel: ‘Serious Unresolved Concerns’
Congressman Gregory Meeks, the top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, has announced he will block the Trump administration’s proposed sale of 40,000 bombs to Israel worth $2.8 billion.
Meeks said the administration did not give sufficient assurances that the bombs would be used by the Israeli government in accordance with U.S. and international law. “The Trump administration’s proposed sale of 40,000 2,000-pound bombs, some of the most destructive munitions in our arsenal, raises serious and unresolved concerns about how these munitions could be used in the densely populated areas of Gaza and Lebanon,” said the Democratic representative from New York.
The package, financed through the Foreign Military Financing program — the mechanism by which Washington gives direct aid to allies to buy American arms — goes through an informal review process by the foreign affairs committees in the House and the Senate. Meeks’s opposition could delay the sale.
The move comes after the House passed a resolution to end the war in Iran and marks increased Congressional pressure on the administration over the expanding conflict in the Middle East.
