Đilas: Serbia needs a “Sabre 2” — we aim to outpoll the SPS to reach 50% with the Student List

Dragan Đilas, president of the Party of Freedom and Justice (SSP) and the lead candidate of the “Evropska Srbija” (European Serbia) electoral list, has declared that Serbia needs a “Sabre 2”. In an interview on the “Dežurni krivac” podcast, he compared his proposal to the major 2003 police operation that followed the assassination of prime minister Zoran Đinđić. “Back then everyone in Serbia breathed freely,” Đilas said.

He added that no one expects president Aleksandar Vučić to accept defeat in the elections, but the opposition will fight with all legal means, including peaceful street protests. Đilas stressed the importance of the support of democratic Europe, as happened in 1996/97 with the mediation of Felipe Gonzalez and in October 2000. “I am convinced we will have it now too, because we, with the Evropska Srbija list, in cooperation with other pro-European parties and civil society, have done a lot for Europe to know the situation in Serbia,” he said.

According to him, the “Evropska Srbija” list does not focus on the question of which list is the biggest “anti-Vučić” one, but after the elections it is ready to cooperate only with that list. “No cooperation with the organized criminal group, whose political wing is the SNS, is possible,” Đilas declared.

“Our task as European Serbia is to be bigger than the SPS, because only then, in total with the Student List, can 50 percent be reached. And this goal is real — all true research shows this,” Đilas said. He admitted the road will be harder if attacks from various sides continue, but guaranteed: “We will not attack anyone who is a true fighter against the regime; we will not answer the slaps we receive, we will turn the other cheek. Because that is how Vučić is defeated.”

The snap parliamentary elections in Serbia are held on October 25, 2026.
