Durrës’ ancient amphitheater enters a new phase of preservation and study

The ancient amphitheater of Durrës is entering a new phase of preservation and study.

Tourism, Culture and Sports Minister Blendi Gonxhja shared footage of the conservation teams’ work, noting that implementation of the Conservation and Archaeological Excavations Plan has begun, an investment of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sports.

Research also continues under the Italian-Albanian project “Medieval Durrës – Amphitheater”, which since 2018 has brought new data on the monument’s history.

On the National Cultural Heritage Day, Minister Gonxhja also shared figures showing growing interest in this important site.

“Visitor interest is growing: from January to August 2026, 28,823 people visited the Amphitheater, about 16.3% more than in the same period last year. Six decades after its discovery, the work to know, protect and pass on this treasure to future generations continues,” the minister stressed.
