ELSTAT: average Greek household spent 1,820 euros a month in 2025 — food and housing ‘eat up’ over half of the poorest’s budget
The average Greek household’s monthly spending reached 1,820.20 euros in 2025, up from 1,724.54 euros a year earlier — an increase of 95.66 euros a month, or 5.5% in nominal terms, according to data from ELSTAT’s Household Budget Survey, published by Newsit. In real terms, after inflation, the increase is 2.9%.
Three items absorb nearly half of the budget: food and non-alcoholic beverages at 371.20 euros (20.4%), housing at 268.12 euros (14.7%) and transport at 247.93 euros (13.6%), Newsit reports based on ELSTAT data. For renters, housing weighs even heavier: 23.4% of monthly spending goes to housing, of which 17.3% goes to rent alone.
The social gap is deepening: the poorest 20% of the population devotes 54.4% of total spending to food and housing, compared with 34.5% spent by the richest 20% — a gap of around 20 percentage points, according to ELSTAT.
Regional differences are large: in Attica spending reaches 2,081.78 euros a month (+14.4% above the national average), followed by the South Aegean with 1,997.11 euros, while in Central Greece it drops to 1,372.96 euros. Urban households spend an average of 1,892.86 euros a month, compared with 1,386.11 euros for rural ones, Newsit reports.
