A hungry Frank Nazar looks to help Blackhawks end six-year playoff drought

Frank Nazar is optimistic that the Chicago Blackhawks can return to playoff contention, even though captain and top center Connor Bedard is expected to miss the first part of the season following shoulder surgery. Newly installed as the top center, Nazar is expected to open the season on the first line alongside Roman Kantserov and Patrick Kane, and says the new group can benefit from the energy and intensity of the game.

According to NHL, Bedard underwent surgery on his left shoulder after an injury during preparations in Vancouver on July 2 and, although he is gradually returning to practice, he is expected back on the ice around November.

Nazar has worked in practice with Kane and Kantserov and says the presence of a player like Kane makes it easier to find space and build chemistry. In the 2025-26 season he scored 41 points (15 goals, 26 assists) in 66 games and is entering the first season of a seven-year contract worth $46.13 million, signed on August 21, 2025.

Patrick Kane, back in Chicago, noted similarities between Nazar and Nick Schmaltz in how they create speed through the middle of the ice and their ability to make a difference. Coach Jeff Blashill praised Nazar’s improvements, particularly in winning puck battles and better puck control, saying he looks ready for a strong start.

The team made other changes over the summer, including acquiring defenseman Bowen Byram in a trade with Buffalo. Byram scored three goals, including the overtime winner, in his Chicago debut in the preseason game that ended 4-3 against Minnesota. New prospects such as Anton Frondell and Kantserov are also expected to contribute.

Nazar is ready to take on added responsibility and play whatever role is needed to help the team succeed, emphasizing the group’s progress and the positive atmosphere in the locker room. As NHL reports, he is determined to do his part to help the Blackhawks return to the playoffs.
