EU Officials Set to Meet in Brussels, Seeking Global Rules Against AI Risks

Government officials from European Union member states will meet Thursday in Brussels to discuss ways of setting global rules to counter the risks posed by new artificial intelligence models.

The meeting will take place within the EU’s AI Board, which consists of representatives of all member states and monitors the implementation of the AI Act.

According to a draft agenda and diplomatic sources, the European Commission is expected to present updates on EU and international AI policy, as well as a technical briefing on recent AI-related incidents.

The discussions come at a time of growing calls to rein in the development of artificial intelligence. Executives of major tech companies, including Anthropic’s Dario Amodei and OpenAI’s Sam Altman, have raised concerns about the safety and pace of the technology’s development.

U.S. President Donald Trump has opposed these calls, describing AI safety warnings as a “scam.” Trump has argued that slowing down the development of the technology would give China an advantage in the global race for artificial intelligence.

According to an EU diplomat, European discussions on international cooperation will also focus on the work developed within the G7, G20 and the United Nations, with the aim of strengthening global coordination on artificial intelligence rules and safety.
