U.S. and 66 countries call on the UN to restore “snapback” sanctions against Iran

The United States joined 66 countries in calling for the renewal of the UN’s so-called “snapback” sanctions against Iran, as Al Jazeera reports in its liveblog on the war with Iran. The statement marks the first anniversary of the 2025 mechanism that restored comprehensive UN sanctions on Tehran.
The joint statement comes after Russia and China last month vetoed a U.S.-backed UN Security Council resolution that would have extended the mechanism for another six months.
The joint statement by the U.S. and allies of the Proliferation Security Initiative calls on all UN member states to fully respect the sanctions and to inspect cargo to and from Iran.
