First major M.C. Escher exhibition in Manhattan opens in New York: “Mathematics and the Art of M.C. Escher” at MoMath
The first major exhibition of M.C. Escher — “Mathematics and the Art of M.C. Escher” — opens tonight in the heart of Manhattan and will remain open at the National Museum of Mathematics (MoMath) in New York from 1 October 2026 to 8 February 2027, as MoMath announces on its official website.
The exhibition, produced by the M.C. Escher Foundation and PANART Connections, brings more than 60 prints, drawings, original wood blocks and other objects by the Dutch artist — details that reveal the symmetry, geometry, infinity, perspective and spatial logic that make his “impossible” worlds so fascinating.
Escher (1898–1972) is known worldwide for his images of impossible architecture, tessellations and visual paradoxes. For this exhibition, MoMath worked with renowned experts such as Doris Schattschneider and curator David Steel, examining the artist not only as a painter, but as an “intuitive geometer” who gave visual form to mathematical ideas.
The opening evening is held tonight, 1 October, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with free admission (registration required), while the exhibition is included in the museum’s regular ticket. The museum is located at 635 Sixth Avenue, New York.
