Gagosian opens major Magritte exhibition in London: “This Is Still Not a Pipe” with over 40 contemporary artists
On September 24, 2026, Gagosian opened at its Grosvenor Hill space in London the exhibition “This Is Still Not a Pipe: The Afterlife of Magritte” (September 24 – December 12, 2026), dedicated to the legacy of René Magritte (1898–1967) and his lasting influence on art today. Organized in collaboration with the Fondation Magritte, the exhibition was curated by Jasper Sharp and Bernard Lagrange.
The show brings together important paintings, works on paper and sculptures from every period of Magritte’s career, with loans from museums and private collectors — from the apples, pipes, bowler hats and cloud-filled skies, his best-known themes. The earliest painting is “Les Fleurs du voyage” (1926), included in the artist’s first solo exhibition in Brussels in 1927; “La Lampe philosophique” (1936) is widely read as a conceptual self-portrait and embodies pictorial explorations of paradox and introspection. Also included are “L’Empire des lumières” (1961) and “La Malédiction” (1931), Magritte’s first single canvas depicting only a cloud-filled sky.
Magritte’s paintings are juxtaposed with works by more than 40 artists of different generations, many created especially for this exhibition — from Vija Celmins, Yoko Ono, Ed Ruscha and Betye Saar to contemporary names such as Harold Ancart, Allison Katz, Jill Mulleady, Dana Schutz, Pol Taburet, Anna Weyant, Issy Wood, Victor Man, Glenn Ligon, Robert Gober, Alex Da Corte, Maurizio Cattelan, Nairy Baghramian, Rachel Harrison, Sarah Lucas and Jordan Wolfson. The installation is inspired by the iconic and paradoxical aspects of Magritte’s practice.
As a historical detail: the famous 1936 “International Surrealist Exhibition” at London’s New Burlington Galleries — in which Magritte took part — was held just steps from the Grosvenor Hill gallery, linking today’s venue to the history of Surrealism in Britain. The exhibition runs through December 12, 2026.
