Greece launches more than 50 major water works with a budget of €1.2 billion

More than 50 major water works, with a total budget of €1.2 billion, are being carried out in Greece, as announced by the Special Secretary for Water Works and Buildings at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, Haralambos Mygdalis. The announcement was made during his speech at the Infrastructure and Transport Conference (ITC 2026), being held at the Megaron in Athens.

Among the major projects, as eKathimerini reports, are the construction of the Myrtos dam in Crete and the Asopos dam in Corinth, as well as the management of the Eschatia, Acharnes and Rafina streams in Attica. The latter two, according to the same report, cover a large part of the drainage basin of Mount Penteli.

The Special Secretariat for Water Works and Buildings is the structure responsible for implementing this package of 50+ works. The announcement at the ITC 2026 conference, as eKathimerini writes, specified neither the sources of funding nor the start or completion deadlines for the projects.

Such water works, as the eKathimerini article notes, also include stream management in the Attica area, one of the most densely populated areas of the country, where the interventions in Eschatia, Acharnes and Rafina aim to increase the hydraulic safety of the basin.
