Greek government approves 20,870 new public-sector hires for 2027

The Greek government has approved the annual public-sector hiring plan for 2027, which foresees 20,870 new jobs for regular staff, as ProtoThema reports. The decision was taken at the meeting of the Council of Ministers, while the plan was presented by Interior Minister Thodoris Livanios and Deputy Minister Vivi Charalambogianni.

The largest share of the positions goes to health, with 4,650 posts — 1,515 doctors and 3,135 nurses and other staff across all structures of the Ministry of Health. First- and second-tier local government receives 3,845 posts, one of the strongest reinforcements since 2020, according to the reporting.

National Defence fully receives the request of the military academies — 1,489 posts plus 1,000 positions for professional soldiers (EP.OP) — while Citizen Protection receives 1,050 posts in the academies and 140 officers. The Fire Service is strengthened with 330 academy posts plus 600 other firefighters, while the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) is expanded by 1,000 new employees.

Apart from regular staff, the maximum number of hires on short-term contracts and employment contracts for 2027 was also set: 29,344 positions. The 2027 plan follows 152,626 hires approved for the 2020–2026 period, bringing the seven-year total to 173,496 jobs in the Greek public sector, as ProtoThema reports.
