The Mazonakis case: lawyers of the remanded doctor say his detention is ‘completely unjust’
The lawyers of doctor Ilias Theodoropoulos, one of the two doctors accused and remanded in custody over the death of the well-known singer Giorgos Mazonakis, say his detention and the criminal prosecution against him are ‘completely unjust’. In a written statement, as ProtoThema reports, the defence stresses that no link of his to the singer’s death emerges — and that time proves this more with each passing day.
At the same time, lawyers Nikos Agapinos and Tellos Agapinos announced on Monday that they are withdrawing from the defence of co-defendant Ioanna Gaka, remaining only in the defence of Theodoropoulos, for purely procedural reasons — the defence positions of the two defendants have factual divergences, according to their statement.
The latest procedural development in the investigation, as ProtoThema and Skai report, is the judicial council’s ‘green light’ for lifting telephone secrecy for the period July 11 – September 10. The decision covers the mobile phones of the two accused doctors, the two secretaries, the nurses and Giorgos Mazonakis himself; a hard disk and a USB memory found in the medical office are also under examination.
The investigation into Mazonakis’s death has seen a series of developments in recent weeks — from the prosecutor’s request for the telephone data to testimony about the persons present at the clinic during the plasmapheresis — and Theodoropoulos’s defence insists that the evidence does not link their client to the event.
