Tragedy in English football, former City player dies at 32
English football is in mourning: Courtney Meppen-Walter has died. He was only 32 years old; as a youngster he was considered one of Manchester City’s most promising talents before a serious car accident cost him his career. Born in 1994, Courtney Meppen-Walter came through Manchester City’s youth system. He played as a defender and was long regarded as one of the most promising talents in the Citizens’ academy. His career seemed about to take off when, in September 2012, he was involved in a terrible car accident that killed two people. Meppen-Walter was tried and convicted, serving sixteen months in prison. City did not renew his contract and the youngster, who had also made his debut for the national under-18 team and worn the captain’s armband, had to start again from scratch. In the years that followed he tried to rebuild his career, playing mainly in the lower leagues. He played for several clubs, including Carlisle United and Stockport. He also played most recently for Bury, the club in his home town. Today the news spread of his premature death, at just 32 years of age. The cause of death is still unknown, but messages of affection and condolence have poured in from many sides. Jon Gold, chairman of Nantwich Town, one of the last clubs he played for, said: “He left an indelible impression on everyone who had the good fortune to meet him. He went through difficult periods in his life, from which he never escaped. We knew him as a person full of positivity and great inspiration. We express our deepest condolences to his family and to all who knew him.” The Football Association also issued a message of condolence: “We are deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Courtney Meppen-Walter, who previously represented our youth teams. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.”
