Iran confirms ‘a small number’ of foreign tankers passed through Hormuz — ‘negligible’ against normal traffic
The Iranian army has confirmed that a “small number” of foreign ships and tankers have passed through the Strait of Hormuz in recent days, as Al Jazeera reports.
Crossings coordinated with the Iranian navy
Iranian army spokesman Mohammad Akraminia said the passage of ships through the critical waterway was negligible compared to normal traffic levels. According to Iranian state media, the vessels were under heavy security and passed in coordination with Iran’s naval forces during the transit.
The army’s warning
Akrami-Nia accused the media of trying to portray maritime traffic through Hormuz as normal, saying the reality of energy markets and shipping shows the situation bears no comparison to pre-war conditions, as Press TV reports. He added that ship movements have fallen to single digits and that Tehran will not reopen the strait until the U.S. meets its demands.
“The Strait of Hormuz is a strategic asset of Iran. The Armed Forces will resolutely defend the rights of the Iranian people and will not allow the enemy to exploit this strategic waterway as it did in the past,” Akrami-Nia said.
Iran has threatened to close the strait as part of its war with the U.S. and Israel, while President Trump has rejected a previous Iranian proposal to reopen it. Washington and Tehran exchange messages through mediators, but with no tangible agreement.
