James Gunn reveals he is writing his next film: a mystery project after “Man of Tomorrow”
James Gunn is not resting. The director and co-chief of DC Studios revealed on 4 October that he has already started writing his next film, in a spontaneous conversation with fans on Threads, where a follower asked him if he was ready to start the new script. “I’m already on it,” Gunn replied, adding that he “had to do something” while he waits for the edit of “Man of Tomorrow”, as ComingSoon reports.
Gunn revealed neither the title, nor the genre, nor whether the project belongs to the DC cinematic universe. The mystery immediately ignited fan speculation, many of whom hope for a third Superman film, with suggestions of villains such as Mongul for a possible sequel to “Man of Tomorrow”. Gunn did not reply to any of the guesses.
The news comes after Gunn wrapped filming of “Man of Tomorrow” on 26 August, after about 93 days of filming. The film comes out in cinemas on 9 July 2027 through Warner Bros. Pictures and brings back David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult as Superman and Lex Luthor, while Lars Eidinger joins the cast as the villain Brainiac.
The way he gave the announcement — in a casual exchange with fans — is no surprise to those who follow him. Gunn has a long history of keeping projects secret until he decides to announce them officially: he waited about two months after the release of “Superman” in July 2025 before revealing “Man of Tomorrow”. The public will apparently have to wait months to learn what the director is writing.
