Jordan Wolfson opens first New York solo show at Gagosian: spiked sculptures and AI-generated photographs
American artist Jordan Wolfson, 45, opens today, September 18, 2026, his first solo exhibition with Gagosian gallery in New York, at 555 West 24th Street. The exhibition runs through October 24, 2026, and marks the artist’s return to the New York scene with new work following “Riverboat Song” (2017–18) at David Zwirner.
At the center of the exhibition are new, uniformly scaled sculptural works that interweave black-and-white and color photographs — gathered from online sources as well as personal and academic archives — echoing art history, popular culture and the artist’s own obsessions.
Among the selected images are photographs of the Twin Towers, a portrait of poet Allen Ginsberg “as seen by artificial intelligence,” and Victorian pornography. Wolfson describes these works as reflections of the “collective paradoxes of the world we live in,” according to a statement given to Cultured magazine.
The photographs are mounted on aluminum sculptures whose corners are covered in spikes; the sculptures lean against the gallery walls on both sides of the 555 West 24th Street space.
Wolfson, born in New York in 1980 and living and working in Los Angeles, graduated in sculpture from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2003 and won the Frieze Foundation’s Cartier Award in 2009. He rose to international prominence after participating in the 2006 Whitney Biennial; his well-known works include the animatronic sculpture “Female Figure” (2014), “Body Sculpture” (2023) and the virtual-reality project “Little Room” at Fondation Beyeler. On the occasion of this exhibition, a conversation between him and writer Ottessa Moshfegh appears in the Fall 2026 issue of Gagosian Quarterly.
