European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos said at the Berlin Process ministerial meeting in Pržno that Montenegro is in the final phase of negotiations with the European Union and that several more negotiating chapters are expected to be closed at the next intergovernmental conference, in mid-October.
She congratulated Montenegro on the reforms carried out and stressed that 18 chapters have so far been provisionally closed, urging the country to continue at the same pace to conclude the negotiations.
According to Kos, Montenegro’s progress has given new momentum to the enlargement process in the Western Balkans.
She said that EU enlargement is a strategic, security and economic interest for Europe, while stressing that the process must remain merit-based.
Kos added that 2026 is already a record year for opening and closing negotiating chapters, as in nine months more chapters have been opened or closed than in any other year in the last 25 years.
