Wadephul: It is time to speed up EU enlargement in the Western Balkans

Germany’s Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul called for speeding up the European Union enlargement process in the Western Balkan countries, describing it as crucial for Europe’s security and future.

Before departing for Podgorica, he said that enlargement in the Western Balkans is a key test for Europe and for the influence the EU will have in the coming decades, especially in the face of Russia’s and China’s growing influence in the region.

According to him, the EU must offer candidate countries a credible membership perspective and fulfill the promises made, while countries that progress in reforms must also move forward in the accession process.

He mentioned the rule of law, the fight against organized crime and corruption, and regional cooperation as key areas of reform.
