London Welcomes Hague Verdict: UK Europe Minister Reaffirms Support for Kosovo’s Sovereignty

London has welcomed the verdict of the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague, as the UK’s minister for Europe, Lord Wood of Anfield, reaffirmed Britain’s unwavering support for Kosovo’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity. In an official statement, the minister stressed that the British government fully respects the court’s independence and its judicial process, and remains committed to justice, accountability and reconciliation across the region.
“The United Kingdom remains a close friend and partner of Kosovo, firmly supporting its sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, as well as peace across the Western Balkans,” Lord Wood said. He added that he was proud of the role his country played alongside NATO allies “in helping to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe in 1999”, and of the support given to Kosovo’s independence in 2008.
According to the British minister, the Specialist Chambers’ verdict “is an important moment, but it is not a verdict on Kosovo’s statehood, sovereignty or right to determine its own future”. He added that the British government’s thoughts are with the victims and their families, stressing that the court’s findings “concern individuals and must not be used to inflame tensions between communities or in the region”.
Lord Wood called on political leaders and public figures to promote calm at this moment, to ensure any reaction remains peaceful, and to put people’s safety first. He confirmed that the United Kingdom will continue working with partners for peace, justice and a secure and prosperous future for all communities.
