Milatović meets Guterres in New York: Montenegro’s European path praised

Montenegro’s President Jakov Milatović met in New York with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres as part of his visit to the United States.

Guterres praised the transformation Montenegro achieved in the two decades since the restoration of independence, as well as its role in regional cooperation and the progress made on the European path. The Secretary-General agreed that Montenegro’s ‘success story’ in the accession process would be an important message both for Montenegro and for the European Union.

On the 20th anniversary of Montenegro’s admission to the UN, President Milatović stressed that the United Nations system has been an important partner in the country’s development and in strengthening democratic institutions.

A central topic of the talks was also the future of the UN in the face of wars, geopolitical divisions and global crises. Milatović stressed the need for ‘effective multilateralism’ and supported the reform of the Security Council, including the expansion of its composition.

The meeting also discussed the process of electing the new Secretary-General, who will succeed Antonio Guterres after the end of his mandate.
