The noose tightens on Iranian aviation: Oman and Azerbaijan ban Iranian flights; Iran cancels regional international routes

Iran has been forced to cancel regional international flights due to intensified U.S. sanctions pressure. Iranian media, citing the Civil Aviation Authority, reported that Iraq and Oman will no longer accept flights from Iran starting Wednesday morning.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced further pressure on Iran’s aviation sector in a Monday interview and threatened states with exclusion from the dollar system if they refuel Iranian aircraft, provide landing services, or sell them tickets.

Majid Akhavan, spokesman for the Iranian aviation authority, said Iran is working to reroute flights to Iraq through another airport, ISNA reported. Meanwhile, the Shargh newspaper reported, citing Azerbaijan Airlines, that flights by Iranian airlines to neighboring Azerbaijan have been suspended with immediate effect.

This marks the expansion of the U.S. economic offensive against Iran, following earlier warnings that all Iranian airlines would be shut down globally.
