National Cultural Heritage Day
Every September 29, Albania celebrates National Cultural Heritage Day, a date dedicated to the country’s historical, artistic and spiritual wealth and to the importance of preserving it across generations.
Officially established in 2003, the day aims to raise awareness of cultural heritage values and of society’s responsibility to protect monuments, archaeological sites, traditions and testimonies of the past.
One of the events linked to the history of protecting Albanian heritage is the stand of Major Kamber Bënja. In 1916, during the turbulent period of World War I, he took part in defending the archaeological treasures of Apollonia from looting by foreign forces. For their stand, he and his fellow fighters were sentenced to death and later declared Martyrs of the Homeland.
Apollonia, one of the most important centres of archaeological heritage in Albania, remains a testament to the richness of the country’s history. The story of its defence serves today as a reminder of the importance of safeguarding cultural values.
On this day, attention returns to heritage as part of national identity and to the duty to preserve it. From monuments and archaeological sites to traditions, crafts and spiritual memory, cultural heritage represents a wealth that belongs not only to the past but also to future generations.
September 29 is thus a day to remember history, to appreciate the country’s cultural wealth and to strengthen the commitment to protecting it.
