New U.S. ambassador arrives in Tirana: details from the surprise arrival and the first stop
Former general Eric Wendt, President Donald Trump’s pick to lead American diplomacy in our country, arrived in Albania at midday this Friday, September 25.
Top Channel journalist Muhamed Veliu, who exclusively followed the new ambassador’s arrival on flight OS573, reports that he was welcomed by state protocol officials and embassy representatives.
After spending about 20 minutes in the VIP terminal at Rinas, the new U.S. ambassador appeared for the first time in our country, a moment captured by Top Channel cameraman Elin Kadillari.
Then, the car flying the American flag set off toward Tirana for a first stop at the diplomatic headquarters on Rruga e Elbasanit.
During his hearing in the U.S. Senate, Eric Wendt laid out four priorities that will guide his mandate:
- Protecting American citizens and advancing American interests, including supporting Albania in the fight against corruption and international organized crime.
- Supporting Albania’s progress toward increasing defense spending to 5% of GDP by 2035.
- Promoting economic and trade diplomacy for the benefit of citizens.
- Focusing on embassy people, including a line of work he called “human factors”, which will aim at using standard methods and creativity.
Former general Eric Wendt begins his diplomatic mission in Albania after a three-year period during which Washington struggled in the Senate to bring an ambassador, since the end of Yuri Kim’s mandate in June 2023.
Less than 24 hours after arriving in Tirana, Saturday morning will find Ambassador Eric Wendt at the Palace of Brigades to present his credentials.
Diplomatic sources told Top Channel journalist Muhamed Veliu that it will not be merely a credential-presenting ceremony, but a long one-on-one meeting is also expected between President Bajram Begaj and Ambassador Eric Wendt.
On Monday, Ambassador Eric Wendt is expected to climb the steps of the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs for his first meeting with Minister Ferit Hoxha.
On Friday, October 2, the U.S. Embassy in Tirana will organize at a hotel in the center of the capital the ceremony presenting the new ambassador.
This reception carries special political significance, as attention will focus on the guest list and, in particular, the presence or absence of both sides of politics.
