Pochettino calls up a new generation of the USMNT as MLS talents get their chance
Coach Mauricio Pochettino has called up a very young group of players for the fall friendlies, which open with the matchup against Peru at Orlando City’s Inter&Co Stadium. Among those called up are names like Alex Freeman, a former Orlando City club product who turned 22 last month, and Justin Ellis, who has taken the place Freeman left after his move to Villarreal.
As mlssoccer.com reports, the camp consists of eight teenagers and 13 players without previous international appearances, most of whom were praised for their standout performances in the MLS championship.
Some well-known national team names, such as Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie, are not part of this camp, as Pochettino wants to see new options. Gio Reyna, 23, said the presence of the young players makes the team more dynamic and that the veterans will try to help them adapt both on and off the field.
The development pathway through MLS academies and second teams is seen as a key element. Adri Mehmeti, who came through the Red Bull system, earned words of approval from former player Tyler Adams, who noted the importance of experience in reserve clubs as a step toward becoming a top-level professional.
Pochettino praised the energy and potential of the young players, saying their presence is infectious for the group. He hinted that all members of the 28-player squad will have the chance to earn minutes in the four scheduled friendlies, as long as they show the necessary readiness. Philadelphia Union’s 18-year-old defender Neil Pierre said he feels honored to represent the jersey and will give everything to prove himself.
In summary, mlssoccer.com notes that this kind of expansion of the player pool aims to create more opportunities and strengthen competition — part of Pochettino’s plan to take the USMNT to a higher level.
