Scandal in Nikšić: dog carcasses from the shelter found in a pit in Brestica

A grave scandal has shaken Nikšić, Montenegro, after activists from the “Korina” animal-protection organization discovered dozens of dog carcasses dumped in a pit in the village of Brestica. The operation was carried out today with the help of speleologists, in the same pit that the veterinary inspector had ordered covered with soil last week.

Using chip readers, the activists confirmed that the pit holds the carcasses of at least 17 dogs from the Nikšić shelter — the electronic chips directly link the dead dogs to the city’s pound. In addition, bags with further carcasses, bones and skulls were found at the scene, reinforcing suspicions that the site has been used for dumping dead animals for a long time, Vijesti reports.

“Korina” announced it will file a criminal complaint with the Basic State Prosecutor’s Office, demanding a full investigation into how animals are treated at the Nikšić shelter and into those responsible for concealing the carcasses. The organization stresses that the veterinary inspector’s order to cover the pit with soil, rather than preventing the discovery of the truth, has deepened suspicions of an attempt to cover up the traces.

The case has sparked major outrage among the Montenegrin public, with calls for strict punishment of those responsible and immediate inspection of all animal shelters in the country. Investigations are expected to begin in the coming days.
